Hello The £2 Tuition Hub (Home Ed Group) community – my name is Gina and I am new to this awesome space. I’ll be delivering the sessions on “CAREERS AND NEXT STEPS” and look forward to connecting with some of your kiddos there.
I thought I’d share some of my background and then let you know what your teen can expect if they join this course.
I am a qualified careers guidance professional (career coach, consultant and content creator) with a mission to support students and graduates on their journey from education to employment and entrepreneurship in a spirit of fun and optimism, not fear and overwhelm! (I am keen to stress the “fun” point – hence my pic of me and my then 6 year old at Notting Hill Carnival last summer She is now 7 – less gappy and just as fun loving )
By day, I have a portfolio career myself – all centred around career support and guidance. I work 4 days a week as Head of Careers in a secondary school in London; work 1 day a week as a freelance careers consultant (at some times of the year) at the London School of Economics and have my business, Your Career And Future alongside that (in which I enjoy creating careers content accessible to all via my Dive Into Your Career podcast and yourcareerandfuture on TikTok).
I encourage people to create lives they will love and think active career development can be an ingredient in that! Careers support can be hit or miss even in mainstream education – and for some in the home education space maybe, just maybe there is sometimes a gap in that “futures” piece (Though there’s a chance it’s the opposite for you and you already integrate it in your child’s home learning!)
Either way – as someone who believes careers and futures is a lifelong journey as we have so many twists and turns ahead in our squiggly careers, I am excited to create a space of learning, discussion and action around:
What is a career really (and is it true that I am already on a journey?!)
Careers curiosity and exploration in a spirit of fun (imaginations welcome and encouraged!)
How to research / discover (traditional, unusual and future focused) careers and next step possibilities
Post-16 and Post-18 options – including university, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship and more
Employability skills (and understanding how existing activities and hobbies are already building those)
Making decisions (with an emphasis of freedom to know those decisions are for now, not forever!)
and… I am also open to being guided by the group, taking and answering questions to ensure that anyone feeling stuck or overwhelmed knows they have additional support here (while making sure they become increasingly excited and empowered to find some of their own answers)
We’ve positioned “Careers and next steps” as 13+ as a guide, not a rule.
